Tax bill for average Canadian family up 1,787% since 1961: Report : CRA SOTW

QMI Agency

Canadian families are spending more money on taxes than on food, clothing and shelter combined, a new Fraser Institute report says.

Nearly half of the average family's income (42.7%) went toward federal, provincial and municipal taxes in 2012, the conservative think-tank says.

The average family earned $74,113 and paid $31,615 in taxes, including income, sales and property taxes; employment insurance and Canada Pension Plan contributions; and what the institute calls "hidden" taxes like import duties and gas taxes.

The tax bill has ballooned 1,787% since 1961, the report says.

Meanwhile, basic necessities took up 36.9% of the family budget.

That's the reverse of the situation in 1961, when food, clothing and shelter accounted for 56.5% of the budget and taxes took up 33.5%.

The outlook is even worse when government budget deficits are factored in, the report says, because today's taxes aren't covering current levels of government spending.

"Deficits must one day be paid for by working Canadians unless governments take serious steps to reduce spending," the report says.

Perhaps, however the average Canadian family could well examine
*its* spending habits, wasting money on a variety of things such as
cable TV, designer label clothing, bottled water, trading in
vehicles far too soon, living beyond its means, running up credit
card debt...the list is endless.

Agreed. The majority of Canadians are truly economic idiots.
Government even counts on the stupidity, easier to milk people like
tax-slaves.

Government is the most expensive item in anyones life, yet people know
so little how government wastes their moneys. Apathetic, stupidity or
just blind ignorance, we as a country are economic idiots.

And NDP and other parties love the ploy too, when people don't get the
trinkets, they then are even easier to rule as they think with greed and
envy. So you make promises for trinket welfare to a vote, screw the
rich mentality.

Give them toys, trinkets and iPads....but screw them good with taxes.

All on a credit card. A nation of delinquent and chronic debt
addiction. Its always about other peoples money.

Liberal-socialism is a great idea so long as the credit is good and
other people pay for it. When the credit runs out and those that pay
for it leave, they can all share having nothing but debt and discontentment.
